We have been busy fabricating custom built-ins for the couple we just finished the kitchen for. They are such lovely people, I wish we could work for them forever!
This time we are doing a wall of bookcases with a mantle in the middle (this was found by the homeowners in an antique shop) with a new firebox inserted and a large screen TV above. It boasts fluted columns, arches, and keystones to match the arched doorways at the entry of the room. It is painted white to match existing moldings.
This is at the start

Finished media wall with bookcases
And here is the learning: nothing is as easy as it seems. I tend to think everything can be done fast and easy, arches – no problem, keystones – easy, fluted columns – piece of cake! My husband must constantly remind me if you want good craftsmanship, it takes time……and lots of planning!
These clients were willing to wait to achieve exactly what they wanted. And you need to be flexible because inevitably things change, upgrades are needed and people change their mind. Be willing to go with the flow and don’t sweat the small stuff!
