Is expensive! But worth it.
I often get an idea in my head about a piece of furniture or cabinetry that will work in my space, and when I go looking for it, I discover that what I was envisioning doesn’t exist in the real world. At this point I turn to my husband and try to explain what I want. Generally, we have a kind of shorthand, I can explain something and he automatically knows what I am trying to say and we design it together. Occasionally I ask for something that is way harder to manufacture than I think it is and I find out my budget won’t cut it.
This is the point when I try to re-imagine a piece of furniture into what I want. My most recent acquisition is just one of those projects. This mid-century armoire that I picked up for $200 is going to be transformed into a hidden workspace. I plan to add roll-out shelves, a couple of drawers, a cubby big enough for a printer and a mounted computer screen. At least that’s my plan…..as you can see, I’ve been making do with just some shelves and a pencil cup, and it’s been 4 months. If I ever get it complete I will update the post with new photos.
My point is that you can’t always “buy off the rack,” sometimes a space requires a custom touch and paying a little extra is always worth it. In addition, customizing an antique or vintage piece sometimes will fill the requirement, and there’s the added satisfaction that you preserved something that may have been tossed out.
