My own little project

If you’ve read any of my posts you know in between my client projects, I have many of my own home projects scattered in for good measure. This little project was more like the end to our bigger kitchen project. We finally got my storage closet by the back door completed.

To catch you up: We moved into our house, gutted the kitchen, 7 years later decided to tweak it. We moved our bathroom door, replaced some old floorboards, gutted the bathroom, installed new upper kitchen cabinets, created a whole new coffee bar space, and painted. Our last project was the tiny back hall storage closet.

My issue was that I have no closet for cleaning supplies or a vacuum, etc. We have a tiny amount of space near the backdoor but there is a circuit breaker box there as well as some light switches that were very ill-placed!

We called an electrician to move the switches, and thank God he didn’t take my advice. He put them where they should go rather than the easiest spot, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Now for the cabinet: we are working with a tiny amount of space, and to add insult to injury, the two side walls are not the same length. This required a custom cabinet. Enter the best cabinet-maker I know.

My amazing husband somehow found the right hardware to make this cabinet work and voila! we now have a place to put stuff! And the best part is, it looks intentional, like it should have looked all along. Below is not quite a “before” pic, more like a “during,” but you can see what it looked like.

And this is the finished product

I painted it the same color as the kitchen cabinets for continuity. So here is the learning: 1) Sometimes custom is the only way to go, and 2)Let the professionals call the shots. You may think you know better (I have thought this a few times), but at least ask them what they think, you are not just hiring them to do the work, you are hiring them for all their experience and expertise.

I consult, design, and remodel spaces that reflect the homeowner’s lifestyle and budget by getting the cost question out of the way and really listening to what my client wants and how much they have set aside for their project.
